This week's free Youtube video is a one hour class about moving from basic Kihon to techniques that can be used in Kumite (free sparring).
It’s not always easy to understand how the basic techniques such as Oi Zuki can be used in a more realistic context like Self-defense or free sparring.
Please refer to this article to understand my vision about basic techniques like Oi Zuki :
But the important thing to understand is that this basic Kihon techniques are not designed to be used as is in Kumite. You don’t fight with Zenkutsu Dachi! They are just a means of learning core principles - that you should use in fight, building a responsive body and forging a sharp spirit.
So, in this class, after a few basic Kihon to put the mind and body in “Karate mode”, I show you how you can smoothly transform, following 3 simple patterns, Oi Zuki, Gyaku Zuki, Kizami Zuki and Mawashi Geri so that you can use them in Kumite.
And to round off the class, we practice the Bassai Dai Kata, one of Shotokan's basic tools for building mind, power and Kime.
Hope you’ll enjoy it!
